At the core of 47 Tucanae, stars are densely packed. This density pro- duces some of the rarest stellar interactions in the galaxy, such as collisions, mergers, and other encounters.
Both of these images were taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. The one on the left is before and the one on the right after COSTAR. The post-COSTAR image reveals many more details, including previously undetected white dwarfs. With the discovery of these stellar remnants, astronomers will be able to determine more accurately the globular clusterΓÇÖs age and, eventually, the age of the universe.
